Mary

Hunkeler

77, Devoted

Supporting others is a part of the foundation of who Mary Hunkeler is, and it fuels every action she undertakes for others as a philanthropist and an engaged member of the community. Mary has been a devoted supporter of Children’s Mercy Hospital for more than 30 years. With a background in nursing, Mary has a unique understanding of the significant role nurses play in the care of patients and how important it is for children and families to have access to extraordinary care. As a member of the Children’s Relief Association, a volunteer group that supports the hospital, Mary has encouraged many others to support the hospital and even to become members of the organization themselves. She has been a member of this organization for 27 years and has amassed nearly 600 volunteer hours. About supporting Children’s Mercy and the thousands of children and families who come through the hospital’s doors every day, Mary says, “It’s not about you. It’s about helping those children, giving them hope. The more you give, the more you have to give. It becomes an endless stream.” Mary has volunteered at the Crippled Children’s Nursery School (now Children’s TLC); served on the Foundation Board for the Harry S. Truman Library Institute, including as chair; and the Advancement Board for Kansas University Medical Center. She was the first woman president of the American Royal Association and is a past Chapter Chair of the American Red Cross.
