81, Compassionate

Compassionate is the perfect way to describe Sandra Lerner. Her mentor took her under her wing at age 13, teaching her and encouraging her to use her talents and develop the skills to help other people. She was working with local chapters of an international youth group at 17 when she started teaching leadership skills to teenagers. When her mother decided to move to Village Shalom nineteen years ago, Sandra started volunteering with the community and has continued even though her mother has since passed away. Her ability to connect with patients in the Memory Care Unit and communicate with and comfort the families is remarkable. She started and is chair of the Annual Bridge Tournament at the Jewish Community Center that is co-sponsored by Jewish Family Services Food Bank. The food bank services the entire Kansas City Community regardless of religious affiliation. She is also very involved with Mindy Corporan’s Seven Days in April Foundation of Faith and has served as an ambassador in past years. Sandra’s way of staying active and engaged in the community is to have a good understanding of what is happening and face reality. “Do what you gotta do!”
