Ryger

76, Electric

A younger, energetic illustrator, designer and writer, Nancy Ryger soon found herself involved in the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO). She served on the local board, and produced their newsletter. Nancy soon turned her service energy to volunteering at KC Shepherds Center. A favorite memory from ‘the early days’ was manning the phones one day when the White House called! KCSS co-founder Ruth Blake was being named National Volunteer of the Year by President George W. Bush. This volunteering excitement got to Nancy and soon she was entrenched in the Meals on Wheels program. Delivering meals all morning has a 1 pm deadline that keeps her moving. With clients fed and happy, Nancy returns for individual social visits the rest of the afternoon. She knows birthdays, always delivering handmade cards and treats- completely focused on celebrating their special day.

She observed a need with Adventures in Learning participants who were “non-driving”. Nancy coordinated a team of van drivers. This drive time with clients is a favorite of hers, getting to know her passengers. These friendships led her to organize visits to one man when he had to leave his Adventures group, when moved to a skilled nursing facility. Nancy made sure he had numerous visitors weekly from his old group.

Why is she like this? Growing up in Elkhart, IN, she watched her senior parents’ age without services they deserved. She loves to give clients encouraging pep talks, thinking of everyone as ‘her parents’. Electric indeed, she charges up her clients and fellow volunteers.
