Janet

Janet Fisher is the embodiment of volunteerism. After a stellar career as a French teacher in the Hickman Mills School District where she enriched her students’ mastery of French by taking many of them to France to experience the language and culture. Janet has channeled her passion for sharing her knowledge into a variety of activities. She has worked as a volunteer at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art for 24 years in various positions and continues to devote her time to the Spencer Art Reference Library even during the pandemic. Kansas City Sister Cities and the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts are also recipients of her boundless energy and talents.

Mayor Charles Wheeler established the Kansas City Ethnic Enrichment Commission, currently composed of 60+ countries, to foster understanding and appreciation of Kansas City’s cultural diversity. Janet serves as the Commissioner of France. In that capacity, one of her responsibilities is organizing the French crêpe booth at the annual Ethnic Enrichment Festival.

Janet became involved with Shepherd Center Kansas City and Adventures in Learning program through her friend and fellow teacher Marge Roberts. True to her desire to share her knowledge and international experiences she prepared four presentations on France for the participants. Through these presentations she highlighted details of her many trips along with information regarding the culture and arts in a country she considers her second home. Janet exemplifies the term “community service” and her raison d’être is in sharing her knowledge and helping others.
