Cheryeal

An involved role model once motivated Cheryel to get involved in neighborhood revitalization. Today, she motivates others and continues to invest energy to ensure that revitalization occurs. Cheryel currently serves as president of the Foxtown East Neighborhood Association — her second multi-year stint as the group’s leader. As part of ongoing beautification efforts in Foxtown, where she has lived for more than 40 years, she helped transform a vacant lot into a landscaped rose garden, and led efforts to create and erect a Foxtown sign that promotes neighborhood pride.
As a member of the 5th District Advisory Board, Cheryel is among people who advise city council members about neighborhood issues. She also serves on the advisory board of the UMKC Center for Neighborhoods, which is a catalyst for urban-mission and community-based research and outreach. “The focus is to improve the effectiveness of neighborhood organizations so they can better address issues identified by the people who live there,” she explains. Cheryel completed neighborhood leadership training and, in addition to her work in Foxtown East, she used that expertise when she represented Kansas City as a 2019 Cohort Six NAACP member.
Cheryel is known as a tireless voter-registration worker who steps up to prepare people to cast their ballots. Before retiring, she worked at both Hallmark and Western Electric. She is the proud mother of twin daughters, the grandmother of three and is an active member of Swope Park United Church.
