Volunteering is both fun and meaningful at KC Shepherd’s Center! Whatever your talents or interests, there are many ways you can make a real difference. Our volunteers are part of a caring team that empowers older adults to live healthy, engaged, and independent lives.
Immediate Needs
Home Delivered Meals driver-

Share an hour of your week delivering meals to those in need or become a back-up driver, serving 2-3 times/month

Pet food Delivery-
Volunteer opportunity to deliver pet food to homebound older adults
Animals can help reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and increase social interaction and physical activity. Pets provide other intangibles, too. … Pets can also have an astounding effect on symptoms of depression and feelings of loneliness.
Who: YOU! Must love helping older adults and their best friends.
What: Volunteer will deliver pet food to individuals on a predetermined route.
When: Every other Monday beginning at 10:45 am.
How: The volunteer must have a valid driver’s license, over the age of 18+ with current up to date insurance. They will drive their own vehicle on the designated route and leave pet food in area agreed upon by client and program manager.
Giving the Basics-
Personal Hygiene products for home-bound older adults Shepherd’s Center Central distributes incontinence supplies received from Giving the Basics to Home Delivered Meals clients in need.
Who: YOU! We welcome groups. This is a great opportunity for an individual or even a group of co-workers, friends to come in to help make a difference in older adult’s lives
What: There are three volunteer positions for the Giving the Basics program:

Picking up hygiene products from distribution location

Volunteers help with unloading items, sorting supplies/packaging orders.

Volunteer drivers will deliver items and have client interaction (must have valid driver’s license, current insurance and able to pass a background screening)
When: The second Wednesday of each month, beginning February 12th, 2020.

Item pickup begins at 9:00 am and will be delivered by 10:00 for distribution.

Unloading, packing and sorting shift will take place from 10:00 am to approximately 1:00 pm dependent on volunteer task.

Drivers will arrive between 12:45 pm-1 pm. Most routes take 45 minutes to 1 hour. This is a perfect volunteer opportunity to complete during your lunch break. Routes are pre-determined and all in close proximity to each other.
Other Volunteer Opportunities include:

Provide transportation for older adults to that are no longer able to drive get to and from Adventures in Learning.

Complete Home Delivered Meals assessments for new clients

Provide one-on-one technology assistance to an older adult (smart phones, tablets, computers)

Join a planning committee for our KC Rakes! and Holiday Bags projects, and our 70over70 event.

Fundraising events, and donor and volunteer appreciation events.

Provide office help and greet visitors— a great activity for volunteers seeking a set schedule.

Make cards for home-bound older adults in the community

Be a photographer at events and activities

Host a donation drive for items to be included in our Holiday Gift Bags.

Donate items from our Amazon wish list to be included in Inclement weather food bags.

Gather a team of friends to rake yards for home-bound older adults in Kansas City (fall).
Do you have an idea for a specific project or activity? We would love to hear more! Shepherd’s Center may be able to provide group activities with appropriate notice.
College students: earn service learning hours or participate in a for-credit internship with your school program.
