Giving Tuesday starts the holiday giving season for us at KC Shepherd’s Center.

It’s always a crucial time of the year for nonprofits: Approximately 31% of annual giving occurs in December -- with 12% of that occurring the last three days of the year. That is the equivalent to one-third of all yearly donations.

We are so thankful for our donors who generously entrust us with their funds. Without your support, we truly cannot provide the services and support for our seniors throughout Kansas City.

The holidays can be a joyous time -- and a lonely time. In giving, you are helping our beloved elders enjoy some holiday cheer when they may so desperately need it.

The struggles of winter

As you may know, this time of year can be particularly difficult for older adults.

Social isolation is something this age group struggles with and can create a higher risk for depression, especially at a time where they may not be able to gather with family for the holidays.

And it can be even harder for older adults after the holidays. They are at greater risk for cold weather struggles such as hypothermia, pneumonia and falling on snow and ice. They also struggle with the “Winter Blues” and isolation brought upon by fewer community activities and a decrease in motivation.

It’s during this time that older adults really need us!

KC Shepherd’s Center strives to answer the call and meet seniors where they are. The Phone Pals program can give seniors conversation and friendship even in isolation. Our Meals on Wheels provides more than a meal to homebound elders, and Senior Companions give friendship and assistance to older adults with disabilities.

It’s all part of our mission to uplift older adults so they can live healthy, engaged, and independent lives.

You can also give your time this holiday season

In addition to funds, giving of your time is so important to us and truly makes a difference. Here are other ways you can help support KC Shepherd’s Center:

  • If you have 30 minutes, you can be one of our Phone Pals, & provide companionship to one of our wonderful seniors.

  • Deliver meals to homebound seniors through our Meals on Wheels program

  • KC Shepherd’s Center is always seeking volunteers to help us connect with the thousands of seniors during the winter. Learn more about volunteering here.

Your giving truly matters

Simply put, by donating to Kansas City Shepherd’s Center, you will be helping older adults achieve a higher quality of life.

A little does go a long way, here’s a few ways your donation may be used:

  • $100 can feed twelve older adults for one week

  • $250 can fund an Adventures in Learning program for an entire day!

  • $500 can feed one elder for an entire year through Meals on Wheels.

  • and so much more!

One of the best ways to support your community is by giving to a local nonprofit. Your support directly impacts your community – your friends, neighbors and loved ones.

Our seniors have done so much for our families and communities. This holiday season lets give back to them.
